Middle-School Melodrama

Hayley always knew she’d be rockin’ out in stadiums. “When I was little and living in Mississippi, I would recruit friends to be in my imaginary band,” she says. “But no one liked music like I did. We were in the South, and almost everyone was into sports or pageants.” When asked if she ever put on a tiara, she rolls her eyes and says, “Never!, Oh my god… I would’ve slit my wrists!”

At 13, Hayley and her mother moved to Nashville, - a city that lives and breathes music. She threw herself into singing and even took voice lessons to help her learn how to fully use her powerhouse voice.

But while things were going great musically, school was a nightmare for her. “I was new, and it was like that movie Mean Girls,” she says. “This clique would tease me and make up rumors about me being gay. I don’t even know why they did it. I came home crying one day and told my mom I couldn’t be around them anymore. So we decided I would be homeschooled.”

Thankfully, fate stepped in, and by that time, she met two brothers, -Josh and Zac Farro-who were about her age and shared her obsession with alternative music. They became fast friends and started a band. In 2004, after recruiting one other member, (Jeremy Davis), Paramore was born. When indie label Fueled By Ramen heard them play together, they were instantly signed. In 2005, they released their first album, All We Know Is Falling.

It was only months later that Hayley got to enact some sweet revenge on a former bully. “We were on tour and pulled up to Sonic to grab some food, and this girl rolls up on roller skates to take our order. It was mean girl number one.” she says, clapping her hands together. “I’m with my band, feeling cocky, and I go, ‘Yup, give me a hot dog!’ It was the best feeling ever.”

Major Success and Bad Breakup

While their first album earned some attention, it was their second that made fans talk about Paramore in the same breathe as bands like No Doubt and Green Day. They released Riot! in 2007, and the album sold 44,000 copies in the first week alone. A year later, their song “Decode” was the lead single on the Twilight soundtrack. Between the hit record and being part of such a major franchise, the band achieved a visibility they’d never had before, and Hayley became a role model for ballsy rock loving women. At this time, her hair was orange, and she had a make-up free face and a jeans-and-tee-shirt wardrobe that made her stand out next to glitzier pop stars.

Hayley said that was a deliberate choice. “I just wanted to be a dude right then, because I didn’t want everyone focusing on me being the token lead singer. I wanted them looking at the band.” she says.
